cito: “Although Jakarta has diversified its weapons sources since that time, turning to Britain, France, Germany and others to round out its arsenal, U.S. supplies remain essential. According to the U.S. Arms Control and Disarmament Agency, from 1992 to 1994 (the most recent years for which full data is available), Indonesia received 53% of its weapons imports from the United States.

Since the mid-1980s, Indonesia has relied almost entirely on the United States and its Western European allies (particularly the United Kingdom, France, and Germany) for its imported armaments, obtaining anywhere from 91 to 100% of its imported weapons from U.S. or Western European sources over this time period. Major deals with European powers have included imports of 20 105mm howitzers from France, several squadrons of Hawk fighter jets from the United Kingdom, and dozens of combat ships from Germany (equipment that belonged to the former East German navy).
Report: U.S. Arms Transfers to Indonesia 1975-1997 – World Policy Institute – Research Project | World Policy Institute

2: A ocupação do Tibete: 1950 – …

Quote: “In a resolution adopted by 145 votes in favour, 21 against and 22 abstentions, after a three-hour debate, the Assembly said the… recognition of the illegal so-called referendum and annexation of Crimea “constitute, beyond any doubt, a grave violation of international law”.PACE: News – http://assembly.coe.int/nw/xml/News/News-View-EN.asp?cat=8&lang=2&newsid=4982

“Speaking at a Duma session earlier on Jan. 28, Ivanov proposed, as a retaliatory step to PACE’s criticism of Russia, that the Duma international affairs committee draw up a statement condemning the German Democratic Republic’s “annexation” by the Federal Republic of Germany in 1989, “especially considering that, unlike Crimea, no nationwide referendum was held in the GDR.”

“What kind of an annexation was it? Nobody is talking about this. It stands to reason that Divided Heaven [Der geteilte Himmel by the East German author Christa Wolf] was the most popular book in Germany at the time. It’s about Germany. So the proposal [on denouncing East Germany’s annexation by West Germany] is simply nonsense,” he said.

“I’ll tell you once again: It’s wrong to simplify the situation and make judgments about the past based on the current day and current views,” he said.

The dark side of German reunification
http://blogs.reuters.com/global/2010/09/29/the-dark-side-of-german-reunification/

What I ask the Ministers and leaders of Europe to read

Less meeting, more reading.
The information I ask chancellor Merkel to read.
Do ministers have advisers ? Consciousness advisers ? Or only economists-advisers ?
I imagine Mrs Merkel very busy, saying “sorry, I have no time. You see here the heads of main-stream media? That is as far as I my reading can go. Another meeting is scheduled in half an hour. ”
On what do responsible ministers and leaders base their decisions ? Phone calls ?
“Equality, fraternity, freedom!”. It’s not a question of wishy-washy wishful thinking, imitating some nice unity gatherings, together with simply obeying financial reports. It demands an interest for knowing more of  the things that makes that equality, freedom and fraternity impossible. Of course, Mrs Merkel can not do it all on her own. She can not know everything. So why doesn’t she READ ? Why does she and all other people in similar positions, not take the time to be seriously informed by those who  investigate and present reports that go deeper into the facts, beyond completely superficial news, and political stands that are taken without any analysis whatsoever ?
“Independent Investigative journalism” – shouldn’t it be one of the major interests of any leader ?

The New York Times Discovers Ukraine’s Neo-Nazis at War
.

War by media and the triumph of propaganda

Some long quotes of this last article, by journalist John Pilger:

The most effective propaganda is found not in the Sun or on Fox News – but beneath a liberal halo. When the New York Times published claims that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction, its fake evidence was believed, because it wasn’t Fox News; it was the New York Times.

The same is true of the Washington Post and the Guardian, both of which have played a critical role in conditioning their readers to accept a new and dangerous cold war. All three liberal newspapers have misrepresented events in Ukraine as a malign act by Russia – when, in fact, the fascist led coup in Ukraine was the work of the United States, aided by Germany and Nato.

This inversion of reality is so pervasive that Washington’s military encirclement and intimidation of Russia is not contentious. It’s not even news, but suppressed behind a smear and scare campaign of the kind I grew up with during the first cold war.

Once again, the evil empire is coming to get us, led by another Stalin or, perversely, a new Hitler. Name your demon and let rip.

The suppression of the truth about Ukraine is one of the most complete news blackouts I can remember. The biggest Western military build-up in the Caucasus and eastern Europe since world war two is blacked out. Washington’s secret aid to Kiev and its neo-Nazi brigades responsible for war crimes against the population of eastern Ukraine is blacked out. Evidence that contradicts propaganda that Russia was responsible for the shooting down of a Malaysian airliner is blacked out.

And again, supposedly liberal media are the censors. Citing no facts, no evidence, one journalist identified a pro-Russian leader in Ukraine as the man who shot down the airliner. This man, he wrote, was known as The Demon. He was a scary man who frightened the journalist. That was the evidence.

Many in the western media haves worked hard to present the ethnic Russian population of Ukraine as outsiders in their own country, almost never as Ukrainians seeking a federation within Ukraine and as Ukrainian citizens resisting a foreign-orchestrated coup against their elected government.

What the Russian president has to say is of no consequence; he is a pantomime villain who can be abused with impunity. An American general who heads Nato and is straight out of Dr. Strangelove – one General Breedlove – routinely claims Russian invasions without a shred of visual evidence. His impersonation of Stanley Kubrick’s General Jack D. Ripper is pitch perfect.

Forty thousand Ruskies were massing on the border, according to Breedlove. That was good enough for the New York Times, the Washington Post and the Observer – the latter having previously distinguished itself with lies and fabrications that backed Blair’s invasion of Iraq, as its former reporter, David Rose, revealed.

There is almost the joi d’esprit of a class reunion. The drum-beaters of the Washington Post are the very same editorial writers who declared the existence of Saddam’s weapons of mass destruction to be “hard facts”.

“If you wonder,” wrote Robert Parry, “how the world could stumble into world war three – much as it did into world war one a century ago – all you need to do is look at the madness that has enveloped virtually the entire US political/media structure over Ukraine where a false narrative of white hats versus black hats took hold early and has proved impervious to facts or reason.”

I end my quote here, because of its length but please do read the rest of the article. It goes on further not about Russia only, but about the “economic crisis” and the austerity, is goes on about how knowledge is needed, and real journalism too, in order to solve our problems instead of creating wars supported propaganda.

As minhas condolências e solidariedade.

Some quotes picked from the internet.

“Control of thought is more important for governments that are free and popular than for despotic and military states. The logic is straightforward: a despotic state can control its domestic enemies by force, but as the state loses this weapon, other devices are required to prevent the ignorant masses from interfering with public affairs, which are none of their business…the public are to be observers, not participants, consumers of ideology as well as products.”
From article ” Force and Opinion” in Z Magazine

“The public relations industry, which essentially runs the elections, is applying certain principles to undermine democracy which are the same as the principles that applies to undermine markets. The last thing that business wants is markets in the sense of economic theory. Take a course in economics, they tell you a market is based on informed consumers making rational choices. Anyone who’s ever looked at a TV ad knows that’s not true. In fact if we had a market system an ad say for General Motors would be a brief statement of the characteristics of the products for next year. That’s not what you see. You see some movie actress or a football hero or somebody driving a car up a mountain or something like that. And that’s true of all advertising. The goal is to undermine markets by creating uninformed consumers who will make irrational choices and the business world spends huge efforts on that. The same is true when the same industry, the PR industry, turns to undermining democracy.
From lecture titled “The State-Corporate Complex: A Threat to Freedom and Survival,” at the The University of Toronto, April 7, 2011

A good predictor of the elections a few weeks later. The industry’s regular task is to create uninformed consumers who will make irrational choices, thus undermining markets as they are conceptualized in economic theory, but benefiting the masters of the economy. And it recognizes the benefits of undermining democracy in much the same way, creating uninformed voters who make often irrational choices between the factions of the business party that amass sufficient support from concentrated private capital to enter the electoral arena, then to dominate campaign propaganda.”
“One of the questions asked in that study was, How many Vietnamese casualties would you estimate that there were during the Vietnam war? The average response on the part of Americans today is about 100,000. The official figure is about two million. The actual figure is probably three to four million. The people who conducted the study raised an appropriate question: What would we think about German political culture if, when you asked people today how many Jews died in the Holocaust, they estimated about 300,000? What would that tell us about German political culture?”
“You don’t have any other society where the educated classes are so effectively indoctrinated and controlled by a subtle propaganda system – a private system including media, intellectual opinion forming magazines and the participation of the most highly educated sections of the population. Such people ought to be referred to as “Commissars” – for that is what their essential function is – to set up and maintain a system of doctrines and beliefs which will undermine independent thought and prevent a proper understanding and analysis of national and global institutions, issues, and policies.”
“Citizens of the democratic societies should undertake a course of intellectual self defense to protect themselves from manipulation and control, and to lay the basis for meaningful democracy.”
